The George A. Spaulding Library at the University of Houston will undergo a comprehensive, multi-million dollar renovation during the summer of 2012, designed to modernize the library and extend its life for another 50 years.
A new entry foyer will connect the library with a new building complex on campus that will house the Spanish Language and Hispanic Studies Program, which has been housed in the library since 1978. A new Spanish Language Center will also be built in this building complex, which will offer additional space for student and faculty research.
The renovation will be designed to ensure the preservation and sustainability of the library’s existing landmark collection while promoting the library’s visual appeal and functionality. Its goal is to make the library more welcoming to new and returning users. The plans include the renovation of the library’s sky bridge to the south, a new entry foyer, new public restrooms, new reading room areas, modernized learning spaces and a relocated information desk.
The renovation will also allow the library to begin several new research programs, including an interlibrary loan system, new collection management systems, and an updated collections database.
"This major renovation of the library will allow it to remain an important center for scholarly and scholarly-related activity and for the development of the University’s intellectual community," said University Librarian, Dr. Jay Williams. "I look forward to working with the library’s staff and library constituents to achieve a successful completion of the renovation and the resulting benefits it will bring."
The library is committed to a $4.5 million private fundraising campaign for the renovation. The goal is to raise the funds necessary to complete the project.
The library was built in 1967 and last renovated in 1998.
Dr. Frank Hernandez, director of the Spanish Language and Hispanic Studies Program, said the Spanish Language Center will be vital to the success of this important project.
"The University of Houston’s George A. Spaulding Library is one of the premier academic centers for the study of Latin American and Hispanic studies in the United States," he said. "The library provides instruction and consultation with librarians from around the nation, and its staff and services have been critical to the success of our program ac619d1d87
